SLHS Artists are Lauded

SALINEVILLE-Southern Local High School students were recognized after gaining honors during the 2021 Columbiana County Art Show.

A virtual event was held in March in light of COVID-19 and resulted in a Best of Show Award in the high school category for senior Zachary Halfhill and honorable mention medals for juniors Grace Haught and Ella Rose, plus further mentions for sophomore Kayla Berkheimer and freshman Natalie DeSellem. SLHS visual art instructor Laurie Ronshak said the school has had multiple winners in the past and she praised her newest award recipients.

“We sent five pieces and had three ended up with awards,” Ronshak said. “We’ve never done that before. I’m very proud.”

Halfhill completed a colored pencil portrait to earn his distinction while Rose designed a charcoal self-portrait and Haught a pet portrait in pencil. Berkheimer offered a mixed media perspective and DeSellem drew a flower in pen-and-ink techniques.

The art show, which is sponsored by the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, invites all elementary to high schools within the county to participate. Artwork was displayed at the CCESC for judges to vote but no reception was held for students, their families and community members to view exhibits themselves. The CCESC will provide a PowerPoint show online for public viewing.

Halfhill, Berkheimer and Haught are remote students because of the COVID pandemic while Rose and DeSellem attend school in person. All of the students said it was their first time participating and they were happy to be recognized.
